We built GlobalComix native-style iOS and Android apps in Flutter, with a reader that handles single page, double page, scroll, and zoom, and we started coding before the final designs were in.

01The ask

Take a comics website and make it feel at home on a phone.

GlobalComix is a digital reading and distribution platform where creators and publishers share and sell their comics, with global licensing and a closer look at who reads them.

It wanted native-style apps for iOS and Android that give readers an immersive way into many story types, art styles, and formats. The apps had to keep the art’s visual quality while turning the website into mobile, with smooth movement between screens and responsive image and data handling.

In their words

  • “Their combination of competency and desire to go the extra mile is impressive. CreateThrive goes beyond what was defined to create delightful outcomes. Their commitment to quality is outstanding; I’m very happy with their work.”

CEO & Lead Engineer, GlobalComix Christopher Carter

02The reader

Pinch, swipe, scroll, and the art stays crisp.

We studied how readers use gestures and what they prefer, then built the reader around it. It supports single page, double page, scroll, and zoom, with layouts tailored to mobile.

The gestures got the most testing. We iterated on scrolling and zooming until they felt natural in the hand.

We went with Flutter because one code base covers iOS, Android, tablets, and desktop. Its GestureArenaManager is what lets a reader go page by page, double page, or scroll to the end.

03The build

Coding while the designs were still being drawn.

Wireframes came early and more screens and specs arrived as the project moved, so each section could be estimated as it landed. We built functionality early, refined it as the design system matured, and shipped features in stages with regular check-ins and reviews.

The work was organized in Jira and the rest of the Atlassian suite, so the client could see every stage, its progress, and its priority.

The backend already existed, so we mapped its endpoints, worked out what was there, and planned the next steps with the GlobalComix team. The apps plug into it without costing performance or data integrity.

04What changed

The schedule held and the panels stayed sharp.

  • The reader

    Gestures that feel natural.

Readers zoom, swipe, and switch between single page, double page, and scroll, on layouts made for mobile.

  • The art

Comic art that holds up on a small screen.

High-quality visuals across the comic formats the platform carries.

  • The backend

    The existing backend, kept intact.

The apps work with the backend GlobalComix already had, with its performance and data integrity preserved.

  • The date

    Delivered on the ambitious schedule.

Close collaboration, continual feedback, and efficient project management kept the launch on time.

05If you’re next

What we’d tell a team in GlobalComix’s seat.

  1. 01

Start building before the designs are final if the wireframes are clear. Add screens and specs as they arrive and estimate each section as it lands.

  2. 02

Keep iterating on the gestures. Readers judge a comics app by how zoom and scroll feel, and that only comes right after rounds of testing.

  3. 03

Map the backend you already have before writing mobile code. Knowing which endpoints exist saves rework later.

Roll credits.
